By observing, from above, the Google Maps’ digital replica of Siracusa is impossible to detach it from the rest of the island, the Mediterranean sea and to all of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean water.

Sicily is the centre of a network of ecological, geopolitical and cultural relations, related to the Mediterranean sea. To imagine the future of Siracusa means speculating on how these transformations of the Mediterranean will affect the land and its populations. 1869 is the year in which the Suez Canal was opened. This geographical act initiated not only a drastic change within the ecosystem, it also strongly impacted the whole transformation of the use of the Mediterranean sea, therefore of Sicily. The island which will emerge in 2071 will give a new identity to Sicily, between desertification, sea level rise, migration of humans and colonisation of certain animal species; between industrial and cultural transformation.

This research tries to envision the Sicilian mutation by constantly looking at the past and simultaneously projecting into the future.
