RENAISSANCE
Set Design & Catalogue Design, Museion, Bolzano, 2024
RENAISSANCE brings together a selection of works by young artists from South Tyrol and Milan. Despite the diversity of their practices, the artists all share, in the broadest sense, a commitment to a regenerative ap- proach toward and critical examination of their own cultural heritage. The featured artists use found objects, images, and methods—whether conceptually or materially—to lay bare the foundations, or the ruins, of hegemonic social and aesthetic patterns of representation in or- der to give rise to something new. While some set out to trace traditional rituals and spiritual practices, along with the experiences of mi- gration or the family histories that accompany them, others undertake a critical analysis and re-evaluation of formative pop-cultural images, urban fictions, or stereotypical gender roles in literature, film, design, architecture, and adver- tising. Several of the artists devote themselves to recycling waste products from the creative industries, in which they sometimes work at the interface between fine and applied arts. In various transdisciplinary ways, all the artists address questions of belonging based on an understanding of cultural identity as something fluid and not immutable.
The exhibition takes place in con- junction with the VG Award 2024, a grant of sixty thousand Swiss francs awarded annually by the Swiss Vordemberge-Gildewart Founda- tion in partnership with a European exhibition venue—this year, the Museion—to an artist from the respective region aged thirty-five or under. RENAISSANCE presents works by the shortlisted artists, from which an independent international jury will make their selection.
