The Self Observing Landscape

AA Visiting School 2023
A research and educational project by (AB)NORMAL

The Self-Observing Landscape is a Visiting School developed by (ab)Normal.
The program explores the intersection of ecology, technology, and representation by constructing digital landscapes—virtual territories forming a "self-aware" world map. Utilizing 3D scanning and real-time simulation, the workshop investigates how digital twins redefine our planetary understanding. Focusing on Northern Italy’s Alpine regions, the project examines how environmental monitoring transforms the landscape into a self-reflective, cybernetic entity. Through fieldwork and digital experimentation, participants created speculative visual studies that challenge traditional perceptions of nature. Ultimately, the school questions how pervasive digital observation reshapes our grasp of territory and reality.
